Hi Friends,
My name is Tianna and I am the Executive Director of Blog Content for We Lead Surgery. I’d like to use this first blog post as an opportunity to say welcome to the movement! As our founder and CEO, Carlene Partow, has so beautifully explained, “We Lead Surgery is a international movement with an intersectional focus dedicated to supporting women throughout their journeys to becoming surgical leaders through mentorship, academic interventions and radical culture change. Our growing group of members is united by the shared goal of empowering young women as they embark on their surgical careers.” As a follower, reader and supporter you are cordially invited to join our network of incredibly diverse and unique individuals supporting women throughout their paths to becoming surgical.
You may ask: Why is this important? The statistics surrounding the representation of women in our field are alarming. Fourteen percent of plastic surgeons are women. Six percent of neurosurgeons are women. Less than five percent of cardiothoracic surgeons are women. The number of women surgeons of color is so low that it escapes report. It is our mission to increase these numbers. Some of the ways we plan to do so include encouraging dialogue through our social media platforms, celebrating the achievements of women in surgery and supporting your women through our newsletter, providing opportunities for mentorship in the form of Q and A’s through our YouTube series, keeping members connected through Facebook and (you guessed it) by continuing to offer updates, interesting stories and first person features through regular Blog posts.
Are you convinced? Stay tuned! We are so thrilled to have you supporting women in surgery and look forward to growing together, learning from one another and continuing to root for each other on this amazing journey. Welcome to the movement, we look forward to getting to know you!
